Personal Statement

This is a copy of the Personal Statement which was issued in August 2019. I am currently working in this role as a Job Share on THURSDAYS and FRIDAYS

Hello – I’m Kevin Stanley, and for over twenty years, I’ve been an active member of the NUJ.

I passionately believe that union members are best served by reps who know and understand the workplace. I’m based in Local Radio in Nottingham, where we share a newsroom with TV and online colleagues, representing all sectors of our industry through challenging times.

Undoubtedly the biggest immediate challenge for the BBC is the decision on Licence Fees for the over-75s, the result of a Government fudge which has left the Corporation in the ludicrous position of having to part fund a welfare payment. We’re yet to see the detail of the possible impact on jobs and output, but I stand ready to fight any attempt to cut posts or programmes as a result of this announcement.

I also recognise that tour wellbeing matters. Most recently, I’ve been addressing a range of casework locally, including the impact of the new terms and conditions and equal pay claims. I’m also closely involved in several cases involving individual grievances and disputes.

The NUJ needs to improve the way it communicates with you. So, whenever possible, I’ll come to you – or at the very least organise a face to face meeting online. You’ll also get frequent updates of the work your reps are doing, sharing ideas, campaigns and good practice.

For the future, it’s essential that the Union modernises and reforms. I propose to launch a recruitment and retention campaign in every BBC workplace, ensuring that our Chapels remain active and relevant in a rapidly changing landscape.

At a national level, I’ll ensure that your voice is clearly heard by the National Executive, and at Delegate Meetings, which decide the Union’s policies and priorities.
